Sturdy Shoes for Safety and Fun

For this week’s two field trips, please remind your child to wear sneakers or sturdy walking shoes on Wednesday and Friday. We will be hiking on Wednesday at the Rio Salado Riparian site. (Sneakers are also required on Tuesdays and Thursdays for PE.)

Little Class in the Big Woods

Pioneer Village – The children voted during their community meeting to also have a potluck party during our trip to Pioneer Village this Friday. Please look for a food sign up list on Monday on our door. The student-led committee is planning the menu with the types of food that were eaten by families who lived on the prairie in the 1800’s. Their ideas come from the book “Little House in the Big Woods”. So we are celebrating this book and historical time on Friday. Anyone have snow for the original snow cone with maple syrup? Thank you parents. We do have enough drivers.

New Classroom Leaders

Congratulations to our new class President, Rosario, our new Vice President, Andrra and our class Secretary, Jared. Special thanks to our outgoing President, Sophia, Vice President, Jaran, and Secretary, Emily. You helped our class a lot!

We had an exciting inauguration day by watching the event and having our own elections too.

Mrs. Ramirez and I truly appreciate all parents’ support. Not only are you wonderful parents to your children but you also help us greatly by supporting us in all of the special activities we have in our class. From laundry and paperwork to field trip chaperones and sending needed items – you are super!

Montessori Lessons

We started the New Year with Montessori’s Fifth Great Lesson, "The Story of Numbers". The children were presented with historical perspective about how numbers came about and what people used to count before the Arabic numerals were in use.
Children have the opportunity to make charts about these types of counting systems: Malaya, Egyptian, Greek, Chinese and Roman.

We are continuing our studies in biology, geography, language arts, reading, art and mathematics. Our field trips will tie in with our studies.

Ottawa University Essay Contest

Last week we sent home a brochure about the Ottawa Essay contest. All students are welcome to participate. Many students volunteered. It is not too late to get involved. Please see the guidelines in the brochure. Even adults can enter the essay contest!

Drafts of the essays are due this week on Thursday, January 15. I will meet with each student and give them feedback. Final essays are due next week on Wednesday, January 21 so they can be postmarked by January 22. Thank you.

· 30 Fri. Pioneer Village 8:30 AM – 2:30 PM. We need drivers. $4 per child, $5 per adult.

· 12 Thurs. Romeo and Juliet 10:15 AM – 12:00 PM at Symphony Hall -walk $2.
· 18 Wed. Arizona Rock Museum 8:30 AM – 12:45 PM - city bus $2
